One recent aviation rescue mission comes to mind out of countless customer stories about our portable heaters. It involves a historic flight to the Antarctic to rescue an ill American doctor who was stationed at a South Pole research center. A Twin Otter plane carrying a crew of four had to be especially equipped with skis to land on the ice and snow. This was an amazing feat, as never before had a plane landed at the South Pole during the harsh Antarctic winter.
With temperatures averaging -69ºC but dropping to -95ºC with the wind chill, the plane landed at the South Pole in the dark in very snowy and windy conditions. This kind of extreme conditions puts aircraft engines in great jeopardy. These severely brutal temperatures solidly freeze plane motors and turn jet fuel into a gelid state. After landing, the aircraft was shut down while the crew rested for 10 1/2 hours. Before restarting the plane, three Aerotech Herman Nelson portable heaters were brought to the site to thaw and warm the engines and the cabin. Several of the employees from the South Pole research station rocked the plane to get the plane loose from the snow. With the plane at full power, the aircraft was able to get moving again and return safely with the ailing doctor and crew.
